New Found Joy

I always thought I understood what joy felt like. I’d felt happiness in big moments, in quiet ones, in laughter that made my cheeks ache and in the comfort of being loved. And for a long time, I truly believed that was it, that I had already experienced the fullest version of joy my heart could hold. Then I became a mom. And everything I thought I knew about love, about connection, about joy… gently unraveled and rebuilt itself into something deeper, softer, and so much more overwhelming in the best possible way. Motherhood didn’t just give me a new kind of love; it brought me closer to my own mom in a way I never expected. There’s something about stepping into her shoes, even just a little, that makes you see her differently. The sacrifices she made that I never noticed. The patience she carried on the days I pushed every boundary. The quiet ways she showed up, over and over again, without ever asking for recognition. Now, in the middle of my own messy, beautiful days when I’m wiping sticky hands, reheating my coffee for the third time, or rocking a tired little body to sleep—I find myself thinking of her. I understand her more. I appreciate her more. And somehow, I feel closer to her than ever before. Our conversations feel warmer now, fuller. There’s this unspoken understanding between us, a shared language only mothers seem to speak. The kind that doesn’t always need words, just a knowing look, a soft “I get it,” or a laugh over the chaos that once felt overwhelming. And then there’s this love. This all consuming, heart stretching love for my child that I didn’t know was possible. It’s in the way my heart feels like it might burst when they laugh. In the quiet moments when I watch them sleep and can’t believe they’re mine. In the fierce protectiveness, the softness, the pride, the exhaustion all tangled together. It’s a kind of joy that lives deeper than happiness. The kind that stays, even on the hard days. Because even when I’m tired, even when I feel stretched thin, even when the house is loud and the to-do list is long… my heart is so incredibly full. Full of love. Full of meaning. Full of a joy I never knew existed before this. And maybe the most beautiful part of it all is this: In loving my child, I’ve come to understand just how deeply I’ve always been loved. And that realization alone has filled my heart in a way I don’t think anything else ever could.
