Marriage Changes

There’s this quiet shift that happens after kids. It’s not loud or dramatic at first, it's subtle. You go from being two people who chose each other every day, to two people who are also responsible for tiny humans who need everything, all the time. And somewhere in the middle of snack requests, laundry piles, and bedtime routines… your marriage can start to feel like it’s running on autopilot. Not failing. Just… coasting. And honestly? Sometimes that’s okay. Because here’s the part I don’t think people say enough: there are seasons in marriage especially with young kids where it’s less about thriving and more about surviving. Not forever. But for a while. And recognizing that can take so much pressure off. That said, there are little things…simple, intentional things, that can keep you connected even in the chaos. Have something that’s just yours as a couple. Not parenting. Not logistics. Not “what do we need from the grocery store.” Something that belongs to you two. For us, it might be a hobby, even something small like watching a show. It doesn’t have to be impressive or productive. It just has to be shared. Something you can laugh about, improve at together, or even be bad at together. That shared space matters more than you think. Give each other more grace than you think you should. You’re both tired. You’re both touched out. You’re both trying. And sometimes that looks like short answers, missed cues, or not having anything left at the end of the day. It’s easy to take that personally, but most of the time… it’s just exhaustion. Grace goes a long way in keeping small moments from turning into big ones. And sometimes it’s not 50/50. Remember: this isn’t forever. Right now might feel like a blur of diapers, tantrums, early mornings, and late nights. Independence feels far away. But it is coming. And when it does, you’ll want a marriage that still feels familiar. Still feels safe. Still feels like home. So if all you did today was sit on the couch together and watch one episode of a show… that counts. If you laughed once, even briefly… that counts. If you made it through the day as a team, even if it wasn’t pretty… that counts. A strong marriage after kids doesn’t always look like grand gestures or perfectly planned date nights. Sometimes it looks like choosing each other in the smallest, most ordinary ways, over and over again while you’re both just trying to get through the day. And honestly? That kind of love is pretty solid.
